Give a short record of the chronicled advancement of Consumer law in Australia. 2.Currently how do Consumer's insurance laws work in Australia? If it's not too much trouble clarify current Consumer law security at both state and government level. 3.If a Consumers is disappointed with a decent or an assistance gave clarify how the person in question can get alleviation through the court framework and outside the court framework. Answers: 1.A gathering of laws and actualizing associations which are ordered by a nation so the privileges of the customer inside it tends to be guaranteed alongside advancement of rivalry, accessibility of fitting and satisfactory data and reasonable exchange the market. As per Corones (2014) a spot where the dealer and the purchaser meet up to work together is known as the Marketplace. The goal of the merchant is to bring in cash from deals and that of the purchaser is to buy something they need or need. The circumstance is reasonable for both the purchaser and the merchant as long as there desires are met. The administration to control the market institute various laws offering rights to the customers corresponding to the nature of products they buy from the merchants. Likewise Consumer protection that the merchants don't enjoy any sort of direct which is probably going to bamboozle on misdirect the customer (Stadler 2013). As indicated by Ramsay (2012) shopper insurance is one of the most fundamental needs of the general public on the grounds that without a legitimate Consumer Protection structure it is difficult to set up a market where the desires for both the purchasers and merchants can be satisfied. In the agreement for deals the bartering intensity of the customer is consistently lower than that of the dealer. Accordingly, shopper assurance guarantees that the bartering intensity of the clients are improved by furnishing them explicit rights concerning the exchange (Cvjetanovic 2013). Purchaser Protection laws guarantee that reasonable exchanging rehearses are started in the Marketplace. Through these laws the merchants and makers become increasingly responsible towards the nature of products gave by them to deal. Shopper insurance guarantees that customers are not exploited in the Marketplace and if such occasion happens they can be made up for any misfortune which has been acquired by them. In the event that customers are not given insurance it would obviously prompt the destruction of the market and along these lines the economy of the nation. As per Latimer (2012) buyers are the base of any Marketplace and on the off chance that they don't feel secured it would prompt undesirable tumult and issues inside the general public. The reason for any business association is to make benefits, therefore, securing the clients through the buyer assurance laws guarantees that the associations don't go too far so as to boost their benefits and carry weakness to the general public. Customer law in Australia had been at first evolved through an understanding between the Council of Australian governments. Hostile to believe enactment in Australia was spent in the year 1906. The Australian government considered the Sherman Act 1890 utilized in the United States to base the Australian Industries Prevention Act. There was an alteration to the Act in the year 1911, anyway it couldn't get viable. In the year 1965 Australian government passed another Act which depended on the Restrictive Trade Practices Act 1956 having a place with the United Kingdom. Further in the year 1974 the fruitful Trade Practices Act was passed, which contained solid authoritative measures to improve rivalry and productivity in business and to forestall prohibitive exchange rehearses alongside giving security to the clients from any sort of uncalled for exchange. The Trade Practices Act 1974 was supplanted by the Australian buyer law through timetable 2 of the Australian Competition and Consume r Act 2010 (Richards et al. 2012). 2.The planned 2 of the Competition and Consumer Act 2010 is a set enactment for the security of buyer and is material as the law of the Australian Commonwealth close by being fused into the law of the state and regions of Australia. Arrangements which were joined in the exchange rehearses act 1974 are extensively reflected for the new shopper law alongside a couple of extra assurances for the buyer. The vast majority of the arrangements identified with buyer insurance of the states and domains enactment are fused in the Australian purchaser law. As needs be the new Australian purchaser law improves security comparable to item wellbeing and quality, business conduct, homesteads and organizations (Pearson 2017). The Australian buyer law perceives and recognizes unjustifiable terms to be void in any case if the agreement can be proceeded without the nearness of that uncalled for term agreement would in any case be material. All the venders are kept from taking part in a direct which is unconscionable while managing some other individual as for exchange and Commerce. The Australian customer law forestalls any vender to take part in a lead which can be misdirecting or beguiling or is probably going to delude of mislead any purchaser corresponding to the agreement for deals of products or administrations. Further the Australian buyer law forestalls any sort of snare commercials which is utilized to incite the clients to build the interest of specific products or administrations without having the aim to gracefully them (Barnett and Harder 2014). The implementation and organization of the ACL is finished by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission alongside the state and domain Consumer Protection Agencies. The Australian Security and Investment Commission likewise partakes in the organization of the law with regards to Financial Service matters (Akinbami 2011.). The government ward of the law is likewise pertinent to the conduct which is done outside Australia by an Australian resident, an individual who is customarily inhabitant in Australia and a body which has been consolidated or completes business in Australia. The government guideline likewise managers over the lead of partnerships, the flexibly of products and ventures to Corporation or allegation of administrations and merchandise from any individual by a Corporation other than open organizations which are recorded. Every single other issue which go under the arrangements of ACL are administered by the states. The Australian customer law gives shopper assurances to the buyers. What's more if a shopper is hurt in light of the utilization of such merchandise or administrations it is additionally the risk of the vender to repay the buyer for the mischief caused to him due to such utilize. There have been a few cases in Australia where fines and punishments have been forced on organizations for the penetrate of Australian Consumer law, for example, the instance of Australian rivalry and buyer Commission versus Bunavit Pty ltd 2016 FCA 6, ACCC v Whistle Co Pty Ltd 2015 FCA 1447 and ACCC v Reckitt Benck iser Pty Ltd 2015 FCA 1408. These cases have not just brought about the installment of financial punishments yet in addition the cost which was caused by ACCC as for the case alongside the restorative notification in business establishment Australia magazine. At whatever point there is an issue identified with the nature of products the buyers should consistently follow a three stage objection process. In the initial step a grumbling ought to be made to the merchant and the issues in regards to the administration or the merchandise must be talked about with them so it tends to be settled. Also using customer ensures and the arrangements of discount, supplant and fix the issue ought to be settled quite far with the dealer outside the court through the procedure of exchange (Australian Competition and Consumer Commission 2017). Be that as it may, if the issue doesn't get settled by following the past stages a shopper may compose a grumbling letter to ACCC preparation the issue. Nuclear Energy Essays (5013 words) - Nuclear Technology, Actinides

Atomic Energy Atomic Energy You are watching the control boards and gages for minister two. Sitting attractive you consider how simple your activity is. It is a joke! Throughout the day you lounge around and watch the gages for reactor number two just to ensure they keep up their settings. You don't have to take a gander at the gages either on the grounds that a PC consequently directs them without you. Life is so acceptable. Out of nowhere all the alarms go of and the gages and shows turn fiercely toward each path. The ground shakes and you can hear the sound of a profound thunder. Obscure to you, the reactor's cooling siphons have neglected to cool the reactor's center and in 3 seconds the temperature went from 280 degrees centigrade to 4,000 degrees centigrade. The water that was in the reactor is quickly gone to steam which makes enormous measure of weight in the reactor center. Over the reactor center there is a 5 foot thick lead plate or more that there is a meter thick floor made out of iron, barium, ser pentine, cement, and stone. The detonating steam fires the floor up like shrapnel. The metal plate experiences the four foot thick solid rooftop like margarine and compasses and elevation of sixty meters. You can hear tearing, ripping, tweaking, shrieking, scratching, tearing hints of a tremendous machine breaking separated. L. Beam Silver, a main creator who secured the fiasco at Chernobyl, said that inside the center, steam responds with zirconium to deliver that first unstable in nature's munititions stockpile, hydrogen. Close liquid fuel pieces break almost radiant graphite, burning lumps of it, detonating the hydrogen. The blast breaks each channel in the structure shaking it with such force that the structure is part into areas (11-13). You look down at your body and notice that it feels hot and your hands appear to be unique. Obscure to you a colossal measure of neutrons are hitting your cells and removing throws from your skin. Out of nowhere everything goes dark. The section above depicts the location of what occurred at Chernobyl atomic plant a couple of years back. From that time until the present numerous other littler mishaps have occurred. From these mishaps numerous individuals have kicked the bucket and millions have been in a roundabout way influenced. Atomic vitality has far to many negative issues than focal points. From the mining of uranium to removal of atomic midsection there are issues of such size that no researcher on this planet has a response for. Atomic vitality has such huge numbers of issues related to it that it ought to be restricted from the earth. To comprehend the danger of atomic vitality we should initially comprehend what occurs in an atomic response. Ann E. Weiss, who has composed a few books regarding the matter of atomic vitality, portrayed what occurs inside an atomic force plant. In an atomic response the cores of its iotas split, delivering vitality as warmth. The warmth makes steam which controls a turbine. Splitting happens in an atomic reactor. The fuel utilized is pellets of uranium. In a cutting edge reactor, half-inch long pellets of uranium are stuffed into 12 or 14 foot tubes made of a compound of the metal zirconium. Around 50,000 zircalloy fuel poles make up the response center. To control an atomic response control bars made of cadmium is utilized which assimilates neutrons. With the control poles set up in the center, a chain response can't start. At the point when the plant administrators need to begin the chain response they actuate hardware that pulls the control bars from the center. When this is done a solitary free neutron is sufficient to set off the response. As the response proceeds, an arbitrator eases back the neutrons down enough to guarantee that they will ceaselessly part more uranium iotas. Simultaneously, the mediator goes about as a coolant. It keep the general temperature around 300 degrees Celsius. Since the temperature at spots inside the fuel poles might be as high as 1,100 degrees Celsius, huge measures of coolant are persistently expected to keep the center temperature at the best possible level. At the point when the plant must be must be closed down the control bars are brought down right go into the center. That carries the chain response to

Obama Stimulus Package Pros and Cons

President Obamas stimulus package, the American Recovery and Investment Act of 2009, was passed by Congress on February 13, 2009 and signed into law by the President four days later. No House Republicans and only three Senate Republicans voted for the bill. Obamas $787 billion stimulus package is a consortium of thousands of federal tax reductions, and expenditures on infrastructure, education, health care, energy and other projects. This stimulus package was to jumpstart the U.S. economy out of recession mainly by generating two to three million new jobs and replacing decreased consumer spending. (See specific Pros and Cons at page two of this article.) Stimulus Spending: Keynesian Economic Theory The concept that an economy would be boosted if the government spent large sums of borrowed money was first set forth by John Maynard Keynes (1883-1946), a British economist. Per Wikipedia, In the 1930s, Keynes spearheaded a revolution in economic thinking, overturning the older ideas... that held that free markets would automatically provide full employment as long as workers were flexible in their wage demands. ... During the 1950s and 1960s, the success of Keynesian economics was so resounding that almost all capitalist governments adopted its policy recommendations. The 1970s: Free-Market Economic Theory Keynesian economics theory receded from public use with the advent of free-market thinking which postulated that the merket works optimally when without government inteference of any kind. Led by U.S. economist Milton Friedman, 1976 Nobel Economics Prize recipient, free-market economics evolved into a political movement under President Ronald Reagan who famously declared, Government is not the solution to our problems. Government is the problem. 2008 Failure of Free-Market Economics Absence of adequate U.S. government monitoring of the economy is blamed by most parties for the 2008 U.S. and worldwide recession. Keynesian economist Paul Krugman, 2008 Nobel Economics Prize recipient, wrote in November 2008: The key to Keynes’s contribution was his realization that liquidity preference — the desire of individuals to hold liquid monetary assets — can lead to situations in which effective demand isn’t enough to employ all the economy’s resources. In other words, per Krugman, human self-interest (i.e. greed)occasionally must be prodded by government to facilitate a healthy economy. Latest Developments In July 2009, many Democrats, including some presidential advisors, believe that $787 billion was too small to bolster the economy, as evidenced by the continuing U.S. economic slump. Labor Secretary Hilda Solis admittedon July 8, 2009 about the economy, Nobody is happy, and the president and I feel very strongly that we have to do everything we can to create jobs. Dozens of respected economists, including Paul Krugman, told the White House that an effective stimulus must be at least $2 trillion, in order to replace the drop in consumer and governmental spending. President Obama, however, aspired for bipartisan support, so the White House compromised by adding Republican-urged tax breaks. And hundreds of billions in desperately-sought state aid and other programs were chopped from the final $787 billion stimulus package. Unemployment Continues to Climb Unemployment has continued to climb at an alarming rate, despite passage of the $787 billion economic stimulus package. Explains The Australian News: ... only six months ago Obama was telling Americans that unemployment, then at 7.2%, could be held to a peak of 8% this year if Congress passed his $US787 billion stimulus package. Congress duly obliged and unemployment has galloped ahead ever since. Most economists now believe the 10% mark will be reached before the year is out. ... Obamas jobless prediction would be out of whack by more than four million jobs. As it stands now, he has miscalculated by about 2.6 million jobs. Slow to Spend Stimulus Funds The Obama administration has stumbled in rapidly circulating stimulus funds back into the economy. Per all reports, as of the end of June 2009, only about 7% of approved funds have spent. Investment analyst Rutledge Capital observes, In spite of all the talk we have seen about shovel ready projects, not much of the money has actually made its way into the economy yet... Economist Bruce Bartlett explained in The Daily Beast on July 8, 2009, In a recent briefing, CBO director Doug Elmendorf estimated that only 24 percent of all the stimulus funds will have been spent by September 30. And 61 percent of that will go to low-impact income transfers; only 39 percent is for high-impact spending on highways, mass transit, energy efficiency, et al. By September 30, only 11 percent of all the funds allocated to such programs will be spent. Background President Obamas stimulus package of $787 billion includes: Infrastructure - Total: $80.9 billion, including: $51.2 billion for roads, bridges, railways, sewers, public transportation $29.5 billion for government facilities and vehicle fleets $15 billion for other projects, including $7.2 billion for public broadband, wireless Internet access, $750 million to the National Park Service, $650 million to the Forest Service, and $515 million for wildfire prevention. Education $44.5 billion to local school districts to prevent layoffs and cutbacks, with flexibility to use the funds for school modernization and repair $15.6 billion to increase Pell Grants from $4,731 to $5,350 $13 billion for low-income public schoolchildren $12.2 billion for IDEA special education $300 million for increased teacher salaries Health Care $86.6 billion for Medicaid $24.7 billion to provide a 65% subsidy of COBRA healthcare premiums for the unemployed $19 billion for health information technology $10 billion for health research, National Institutes of Health facilities $1.3 billion for medical care for military members, families $1 billion for the Veterans Health Administration $2 billion for Community Health Centers Energy $11 billion funding for an electric smart grid $6.3 billion for state, local governments to invest in energy efficiencies $6 billion for renewable energy, electric transmission technologies loan guarantees $6 billion for the cleanup of radioactive waste from nuclear power plants $5 billion for weatherizing modest-income homes $4.5 billion to modernize the U.S. electrical grid $2 billion for manufacture of advanced car battery systems $400 million for electric vehicle technologies Housing $4 billion to HUD for repairing, modernizing public housing $2.25 billion in tax credits for financing low-income housing construction $2 billion to help communities purchase and repair foreclosed housing $1.5 billion for rental assistance and housing relocation Scientific Research $3 billion to the National Science Foundation $2 billion to the United States Department of Energy $1.3 billion for university research facilities $1 billion to NASA American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 BY Wikipedia Pros Pros for the Obama administrations $787 billion stimulus package can be summed up in one obvious statement: If the stimulus works to shock the U.S. economy out of its steep 2008-2009 recession, and stems the unemployment rate, then it will be judged a success. Economic historians persuasively argue that Keynesian-style spending was largely instrumental in pulling the U.S. out of the Great Depression, and in propelling growth of the U.S. and world economies in the 1950s and 1960s. Meeting Urgent, Worthy Needs Of course, liberals also fervently believe that many thousands of urgent and worthy needs... long ignored and exacerbated by the Bush administration... are met by spending initiatives included in Obamas stimulus package, including: Long overdue repair and renewal of dangerously crumbling U.S. infrastructure, including highways and roads, the electric power grid, dams, bridges, levees, water mains and sewer systems, airports, and more; Vital aid to beleaguered local school districts to prevent layoffs and cutbacks, plus $300 million for increased teacher salaries Expansion of public transportation systems, building new high-speed passenger rail systems $116 billion in payroll tax relief for individuals making less than $75,000 annually, and for couples jointly making less than $150,000. $40 billion to extend unemployment benefits, and to increase benefits by $25 weekly Increased medical coverage for military members and their families, and $1 billion for the Veterans Administration, which suffered major cutbacks under President Bush Food programs for low-income Americans, including $150 million to help refill food banks, $100 million for meals programs for seniors, and $100 million for free school lunch programs . Cons Critics of President Obamas stimulus package either believe that: economic stimulus spending is doomed to fail, especially when it entails borrowing to obtain the funds to be spent (i.e. deficit spending); or the compromise size or focus of the stimulus bill doomed the measure to be inadequate to pull the U.S. out of the 2008-2009 recession. Stimulus Spending Coupled with Borrowing Is Reckless A June 6, 2009 Louisville Courier-Journal editorial eloquently expresses this con perspective: Lyndon is getting a new walking path between Whipps Mill Road and North Hurstbourne Lane... Lacking sufficient funds, the U.S. will borrow from China and other increasingly skeptical lenders to pay for luxuries like Lyndons little walkway. Our children and grandchildren will have to pay back the unimaginable debt with which we are saddling them. Of course, the fallout from their forebears financial irresponsibility could first consume them in revolution, ruin or tyranny... Obama and congressional Democrats are making an already awful situation exponentially worse... Borrowing from foreigners to build paths in Lyndon is not only bad policy, but ought to also be unconstitutional. Stimulus Package Was Inadequate or Wrongly Focused Lamented liberal economist Paul Krugman, Even if the original Obama plan — around $800 billion in stimulus, with a substantial fraction of that total given over to ineffective tax cuts — had been enacted, it wouldnt have been enough to fill the looming hole in the U.S. economy, which the Congressional Budget Office estimates will amount to $2.9 trillion over the next three years. Yet the centrists did their best to make the plan weaker and worse. One of the best features of the original plan was aid to cash-strapped state governments, which would have provided a quick boost to the economy while preserving essential services. But the centrists insisted on a $40 billion cut in that spending. Moderate Republican David Brooks opined ... theyve created a sprawling, undisciplined smorgasbord, which has spun off a series of unintended consequences. First, by trying to do everything all it once, the bill does nothing well. The money spent on long-term domestic programs means there may not be enough to jolt the economy now... The money spent on stimulus, meanwhile, means there’s not enough to truly reform domestic programs like health technology, schools and infrastructure. The measure mostly pumps more money into old arrangements. Where It Stands Congressional Republicans tore into the Obama administration over the economic stimulus plan,... arguing that the White House is mishandling the distribution of the money while overstating the ability of the package to create jobs, reported CNN on July 8, 2009 about a contentious hearing before the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee. CNN continued, The White House Office of Management and Budget defended the plan, arguing that every federal dollar spent has, by definition, helped to ease the pain of the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression. A Second Stimulus Package? Obama economic advisor Laura Tyson, former Director of the National Economic Council, said in a July 2009 speech that the U.S. should consider drafting a second stimulus package focusing on infrastructure projects because the $787 billion approved in February was a bit too small per Bloomberg.com. In contrast, economist Bruce Bartlett, a conservative Obama supporter, pens in an article entitled Obamas Clueless Liberal Critics, that the argument for more stimulus implicitly assumes that the bulk of stimulus funds have been paid out and done their work. However, the data show that very little of the stimulus has actually been spent. Bartlett argues that stimulus critics are reacting impatiently, and notes that economist Christina Romer, who now chairs the Council of Economic Advisers, says the stimulus is working just as planned and that no additional stimulus is needed. Would Congress Pass a Second Stimulus bill? The burning, relevant question is: Is it politically possible for President Obama to push Congress into passing a second economic stimulus package in 2009 or 2010? The first stimulus package passed on a House vote of 244-188, with all Republicans and eleven Democrats voting NO. The bill squeezed by on a filibuster-proof 61-36 Senate vote, but only after making significant compromises to attract three Republican YES votes. All Senate Democrats voted for the bill, except those absent due to illness. But with public confidence falling in Obamas leadership in mid-2009 on economic matters, and with the first stimulus bill failing to quell unemployment, moderate Democrats cant be relied on to solidly support additional stimulus legislation. Would Congress pass a second stimulus package in 2009 or 2010? The jury is out, but the verdict, in summer 2009, doesnt look good for the Obama administration.

Old Man And The Sea Argumentative Essay Example For Students

Old Man And The Sea Argumentative Essay TheOld Man and the Sea is a heroic tale of mans strength pitted againstforces he cannot control. It is a story about an old Cuban fisherman and histhree-day battle with a giant Marlin. Through the use of three prominent themes;friendship, bravery, and Christianity; the Old Man and the Seastrives to teach important life lessons to the reader while also epitomizingSantiago, the old fisherman, as a Hemingway code hero. The relationship betweenSantiago and the boy is introduced early in the story. They are unlikelycompanions; one is old and the other young, yet they share an insuperable amountof respect and loyalty for each other. Santiago does not treat Manolin as ayoung boy but rather as an equal. Age is not a factor in their relationship. We will write a custom essay on Old Man And The Sea Argumentative specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now Manolin does not even act as a young boy; he is mature and sensitive toSantiagos feelings. He even offers to disobey his parents and accompanySantiago on his fishing trips. Santiago is viewed as an outcast in his villagebecause he has not caught any fish for more than eighty-four days and istherefore unlucky. Nonetheless Manolin is loyal to Santiago and evenwhen his parents forbid him he wants to help his friend. Their conversations arecomfortable, like that of two friends who have known each other for a long time. When they speak it is usually about baseball or fishing, the two things theyhave most in common. Their favorite team is the Yankees and Santiago never losesfaith in them even when the star player, Joe DiMaggio is injured with a heelspur. In this way Santiago not only teaches Manolin about fishing but also aboutimportant characteristics such as faith. In the story Santiagos bravery isunsurpassed but it is not until he hooks the great fish that wetruly see his valor and perseverance. Through Santiagos actions Hemingwayteaches the reader about bravery and tenacity in the face of adversity. Hedemonstrates that even when all is lost and seems hopeless a faith and willfulheart will overcome anything. Santiago had lost his luckiness andtherefore the respect of his village. Through the description of his cabin wealso suspect that Santiago is a widower. Although Santiago has had many troubleshe perseveres. He has faith in Manolin, in the Yankees, in Joe DiMaggio, andmost importantly in himsel f. This is perhaps his greatest attribute becausewithout it he would never have had the strength to persevere and defeat thegiant Marlin. Faith is not the only thing that drives his perseverance. Santiagoalso draws upon his past victories for strength. After he hooks the Marlin hefrequently recalls his battle with a native in what he calls the handgame. It is not just an arm wrestling victory for him it is a reminder ofhis youthful days. His recollections of this event usually proceed a favoritedream of his in which he sees many lions on a peaceful shore. These lionsrepresent him when he is young and strong and could overcome any challenge. Although he is an old man and his body is no longer like it used to be his heartis still great and he eventually defeats the Marlin. Santiagos perseverance andbravery are further illustrated when he tries to fight off the sharks. He was afisherman all his life and therefore he knows that the fate of his catch isinevitable yet he persists to fight the sharks. The battle between him and thesharks is about principles not a mere fish. Santiago is still a great warrior atheart and warriors fight until the end. One of the greatest and most obviouspieces of symbolism in the story is Christianity. From the beginning of thestory the reader is shown a unique relationship between Santiago and Manolin. .u291d4f6777c610442541548c0c36004c , .u291d4f6777c610442541548c0c36004c .postImageUrl , .u291d4f6777c610442541548c0c36004c .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u291d4f6777c610442541548c0c36004c , .u291d4f6777c610442541548c0c36004c:hover , .u291d4f6777c610442541548c0c36004c:visited , .u291d4f6777c610442541548c0c36004c:active { border:0!important; } .u291d4f6777c610442541548c0c36004c .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u291d4f6777c610442541548c0c36004c { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u291d4f6777c610442541548c0c36004c:active , .u291d4f6777c610442541548c0c36004c:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u291d4f6777c610442541548c0c36004c .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u291d4f6777c610442541548c0c36004c .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u291d4f6777c610442541548c0c36004c .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u291d4f6777c610442541548c0c36004c .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u291d4f6777c610442541548c0c36004c:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u291d4f6777c610442541548c0c36004c .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u291d4f6777c610442541548c0c36004c .u291d4f6777c610442541548c0c36004c-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u291d4f6777c610442541548c0c36004c:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Alexis de Tocqueville?s Influence EssayTheir relationship parallels that of Christ and his disciples. Manolin isSantiagos disciple and Santiago teaches Manolin about fishing and life. One ofthe greatest lessons that Santiago gives is that of a simple faith. Havefaith in the Yankees my son. This type of faith reflects the basicprinciples of Christianity. Hemingways description of Santiago furtherillustrates Christian symbolism. Hemingway gives a reference to the nail-piercedhands of Christ by stating that Santiagos hands had deep creasedscars. Hemingway also parallels Santiagos suffering to that of Christ bystating that he settled against the wood and took his suffering as itcame. Even more profound is the description of Santiagos response when hesaw the sharks, just a noise such a man might make, involuntarily feelingthe nail go through his hands and into the wood. (Page 107) Furthersymbolism is shown when Santiago arrives home and carries the mast across hisshoulders as Christ carried the cross to Calvary. Also, like Christ, Santiagocould not bare the weight and collapsed on the road. When he finally reached hiscabin he slept face down on the newspapers with his arms out straight andthe palms of his hands up. (Page 122) Hemingway puts these themes togetherin such a way that they do not conflict with each other. He does allowChristianity to be a more dominant theme than the other but instead makes itmore symbolic than intentional. He does not smother the relationship between theold man and the young boy but instead separates them for a large part of thestory. Finally, he does not make Santiagos bravery a central them byhighlighting his weaknesses. In the end the old mans perseverance and faith payoff. He finally gains the respect of the village and succeeds in teachingManolin the lessons of faith and bravery. In Ernest Hemingways The OldMan and the Sea, one will find many examples in which the main character,Santiago, surpasses many hardships while being courageous, brave, and being afriend. Each of these: courage, bravery, and friendship, are qualities in aHemingway code hero.

Summary of Article on Current Business Issue Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Summary of on Current Business Issue - Article Example Each year thousands of new college graduates enter the job market in America. During the summer of 2012 the U.S. economy lost 8.8 million jobs and only added 3.8 million which results in a net job loss of 5 million jobs (Corona, 2012). It is estimated that if the U.S wants to cut down the unemployment rate to 6%, which would be near the natural unemployment rate of 5%, for it to happen the U.S would have to create 361,000 jobs a month for the next three years (Corona, 2012). One of the reasons that the official economic unemployment rate the government promotes is not accurate is because it does not account for the 88 million Americans that have given up in finding a job due to the poor job marketplace in America. The unemployment dilemma in our country is about to get worse because as reputable sources such as the Wall Street Journal predict a slowdown in the second half of the year and high unemployment for years to come (Corona, 2012). The current employment crisis in America is t he government fault. The current economic policies the government is implementing are not creating sufficient jobs to reduce unemployment in America. President Obama has been heavily criticized for maintaining Bush tax cuts for the middle class for another year. The policy Obama implement has been viewed as a strategy to earn votes during the upcoming elections. These fiscal policies are outdated since they are aligned with the strategies that the government has used during the last ten years. There is some speculation that the current government is going to impose tax hikes if the Democratic government is reelected. The Unites States economy has a great effect on the economies of many countries around the world. â€Å"There is some truth that our problems are a reflection of troubles in the European Union and a softening of the Chinese economy† (Corona, 2012). The Unites States is the largest trading partner with China and it is not in the best interest of China for the U.S economy to be suffering. Most economists agree that when the U.S economy is booming it has ripple effect that positively impacts the global economy. The TARP legislation has been viewed as a negative variable that has not served its purpose of helping the economic system. These governmental policies were focused on saving the banking industry rather than the general business community. A major reason for the bad state of the U.S economy is the lack of trust of American in what the government if doing. People are getting frustrated at the slow reaction of governmental official at tacking the issues and problems in the economy. A major drawback of the new governmental policies is that they are increasing the taxes for business entities. This is causing a lot of multinational companies to move their operations oversee where they can obtain cheaper labor costs and preferential tax treatments. A lot of companies in the U.S are riding tough economic times and the government is not doing a nything to gain their confidence that they can continue to operate in America in a profitable manner. When businesses face tough economic times the inevitable result is a lack of job creation and a movement of multinational operations to downsizing their operations in America in search for cost savings by moving operations oversee. It is sad that in the United States small companies

Promoting Health in the Community Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Promoting Health in the Community - Essay Example Rates for attempted suicide related to depression register at a rate of 0.3% for men and 0.5% for women (Commonwealth of Australia, 2009). These statistics in Australia are alarming which incidentally reflect similar rates in the global scene. To address the problems of depression in the country, causes, risk factors, and prevention in the primary, secondary, and tertiary levels will be discussed to include strategies to overcome some barriers. Causes of depression Depression is caused by various factors. One is the cumulative negative life experiences such as violence, chronic poverty, divorce, and death (Burns, Andrews, & Szabo, 2002). In the same study, adversities experienced by individuals specifically in adolescents during their teen age years are identified as another cause. Teenagers with poor interpersonal skills and with negative thoughts result in peer relationship difficulties and in coping with family issues (Robinson, et.al. 2008). In addition, the individual’s c ognitive qualities exert some influence into a person’s interpretation of negative life events. ... Low self esteem is also considered a predictor of adolescent depression as reflected in their poor physical and academic performance in school. Individuals with poor social skills are likely to develop symptoms of depression of particular concern are those experiencing difficulties in maintaining social relationship (Cole, et.al. 2001). Lastly, workplace stress is also related to high incidents of depression. Potential health outcomes Depression can lead to a variety of health outcomes. First, it can bring about physical symptoms such as increased blood pressure, heart rate, palpitation, and headache which may result to stroke or heart attacks if it persists (Horn and Miller, 2008). Second, it alters the emotional aspect as evident in the person experiencing sadness, irritability, mood swings, and hostility. Next, it affects behaviour so that the person starts blaming others, becomes defensive among others. Eventually, it alters the cognitive dimension of the person predisposing him to poor memory, excessive daydreaming, trouble concentrating, and preoccupation. Prevention strategies Primary prevention Primary prevention involves reducing the incidences of the disorder to include modifying risk factors. Initially, the individual should involve herself in sport activities of his interest. Such physical activity may not only maintain physical wellness but it diverts the brain from processing depressive thought (Weaver, 2009) and it also turn off the mind from boring daily routines. Another is to practice relaxation exercises like yoga, meditation, and listening to soft music since these may unwind and recharge the body and soul. Exercise for adult has become a part of community

Drug Addiction Among Young People Essay Example for Free

Drug Addiction Among Young People Essay Many young people today get addicted to drugs – they become dependant on various types of mind-altering or stimulating medicines or illegal ones. Addiction often comes hand-in-hand with narcotic effects, whether they are strong or light. It is only a question of time when you get addicted. You gradually become destroyed on all the levels of your health. And this is sad. It turns out to be sadder when you come to know that typical age range of drug addicts is from 15 to 30 years. People of this age represent the main working group in a country, they are both core and roots of a society. The addiction is also wide-spread geographically – you can find people having problems with drugs everywhere, not only in low-life countries, but in well-developed ones too. First of all, young people are especially vulnerable to different sorts of illegal things. Usually it all starts in schools. Children from problematic backgrounds often go into alcohol and then into drugs. First comes the psychological addiction and then physical – you want and you need. They destroy you and then destroy you harder as you get more tolerant to substances. The biggest group of addicts are students as they get off their families and there is no one over them to control. Plus, the spirit of freedom often blinds them and then they cannot get rid of their addiction. The life of addicts becomes spoiled in all spheres – social, as they need to communicate with other addicts, they lose their contacts with families and friends; economical – as they spend all their money on drugs (which are usually very expensive), addicts start to earn their money illegally (running rackets, prostitution, etc.) – all these problems are incidental if to compare them to health problems – drugs are primary dangerous to people health. Opiates like heroin are the most murderous drugs – they waste away your physical resources and supress your hearts work. Heroin is even more dangerous as the form of injections is the most appropriate for achieving  the narcotic effect. Here comes the AIDS. This disease is often called epidemy of our century as there is no treatment and effects are hard to resist and it is lethal.

Discuss the political, social, and cultural developments of China 1500-1900s

The period between 1500 and 1900 encompasses important years that mark the time that preceded the development of modern China. First oppressed by the Mongolian rule in the 14th century, the nation was taken over by the Ming Dynasty that sought out to rebuild centralized control and reunite the country. The Ming Dynasty was replaced by the Qing Dynasty in the 17th century, signaling the start of the Manchu rule. We will discuss in turn the political, social, and cultural developments in China in that time period. Political Life The Ming DynastyComing to the nation as a break from the hated Mongolian dominance, the Ming Dynasty was started by a Han Chinese farmer and a Buddhist monk. In the early 16th century, its heyday when China conducted intense sea expeditions with the aim to conquer the surrounding area and challenge the Mongol expansion was to a great extent over. The Ming Dynasty had to engage in prolonged wars with Mongols to challenge their dominance and protect its borders. In the meantime, its own coastal areas were often attacked by the Japanese pirates that gave Ming emperors a lot of headache. In the north, even the construction of the world’s best known fortification, the Great Wall, did not prevent the attacks of the Mongols. As a result, the Ming emperors in the 16th-17th century were much weaker than their predecessors, like the powerful Zhu Yuanzhang who founded the dynasty in the early 14th century. In addition, internal conflicts were plaguing the court since â€Å"the harassed emperors abandoned more and more of their responsibilities to eunuchs† (Encarta). The Ming started a war with Japan in 1592 when they sent their troops to help the Korean allies to defend themselves against Toyotomi Hideyoshi. This turned into a prolonged warfare that lasted over seven years and dealt a heavy blow to the Ming’s treasuries. The result was an increase in social tensions all over the country. An example is the peasant rebellions in Nor th China that started in 1628. These revolts finally led to the demise of the Ming Dynasty. A hefty rebellion occurred in 1642 when the dikes of the Huang He were cut by a rebellious group, leading to a flood and a starvation thereafter. The assault on Beijing, the capital used by the Ming, in 1644 resulted in the seizure of the city by the rebels and suicide of the last representative of the dynasty. The Qing Dynasty The Ming was replaced by the Qing Dynasty. As is often the result of a politically weak structure, their rule was in fact a foreign invasion since the Qing rulers were not Han Chinese, but Manchu. In order to be accepted by the Han Chinese majority, they retained a lot of customs of the Chinese and even upheld the Confucian tradition, nevertheless they always remained different from the Han Chinese. Thus, they also imposed some of their customs and traditions on their Chinese subordinates. They forced, for example, the Han to pick up the queue in the Manchu haircut style and to dress in their fashion, in this way replacing the traditional Han pigtail. To this day the Chinese wear â€Å"Qipao (bannermen dress) and Tangzhuang† that actually come from the Manchus (Encarta). It is noteworthy in which way the Manchus forced the Chinese to adopt these styles: the penalty for non-compliance was death. In the political system, the two groups were also separate. As the ruling ethnicity, the Manchus outnumbered the Han Chinese in the highest-ranking offices in the capital. However, there were still a lot of Chinese in other offices in the provinces. The Manchus, as mentioned before, were quick to adopt the philosophy of Confucianism that called on subordinates to obey the emperor. With those means, they were quick to bring the nation to obeyance and reinstate order in the provinces. With that accomplished, the Qing Dynasty also took pains to enlarge the empire through conquests and military raids. They attacked the Mongols, conquering the Outer Mongoli a in the 17th century. In the next century, they added to the empire the territory of Central Asia and set up a protectorate in Tibet. With time, they also gained control of Taiwan. With the efforts of the Qing Dynasty, almost all danger to China Proper had been eradicated. In the 19th century, the Qing Dynasty entered a period of steady decline. Their control of the country became weak, and the nation once again plunged into a state of social tension and economic troubles. The Opium Wars began with the First Opium War in 1840, triggered by the desire of Britain to control the lucrative opium trade in China. The desire of the Western nations to control â€Å"concessions† in China led to unfavorable peace treaty following the First Opium War.The Opium Wars resulted in the Treaty of Nanking in 1842 and the Taiping Rebellion in 1851-1864 and the Boxer Rebellion in the same century. As a result of military campaigns and rebellions, the control of the Qing over the country became e ven weaker. Social Life Under the Manchu rule, the nation was dominated by foreign rulers who imposed their rules and traditions on everything. In addition, they also made efforts to keep themselves separate from the mainstream Chinese life. For example, marriages between the Manchus and the Han Chinese were prohibited. The Chinese could not move permanently into the traditionally Manchu lands, and occupations such as trade or manual labor were reserved only for the Han as the Manchus were prohibited to do these jobs. In many administrative positions, the office was taken by the Manchu person and the Chinese counterpart so that the Manchu official could check in on his Chinese colleague. The Qing rulers also imposed some of their customs and traditions on their Chinese subordinates. They forced, for example, the Han to pick up the queue in the Manchu haircut style and to dress in their fashion, in this way replacing the traditional Han pigtail. To this day the Chinese wear â€Å"Qipa o (bannermen dress) and Tangzhuang† that actually come from the Manchus (Encarta). It is noteworthy in which way the Manchus forced the Chinese to adopt these styles: the penalty for non-compliance was death. Cultural Life The years under the rule of the Ming and the Qing Dynasties were an important period in Chinese culture. The Ming rule is marked by the arrival of the Europeans, among them a lot of Christian preachers. Particularly noteworthy were â€Å"Jesuits, members of a Roman Catholic religious order, showed respect for Chinese culture and overcame the foreigners’ reputation for lawlessness† (Encarta). The Jesuits tried to integrate with the local reality, learning the Chinese language and setting up settlements in the nation from which they could disseminate their religion. One of the important leaders in the Christian community was Mateo Ricci who took effort to learn Chinese and settled down in China. In intellectual life, as said, Confucianism was the dominant influence. The government placed emphasis on conforming to the official interpretation of Confucius’ writings consistent with the one provided by Zhu Xi. For centuries, his interpretation was considered standard, and deviation was not permitted. However, in the later Ming period, a few dissenting ideologies emerged, among them one proposed by â€Å"Wang Yangming, a scholar-official who rejected Zhu Xi's emphasis on the study of external principles and advocated striving for wisdom through cultivation of one’s own innate knowledge† (Encarta). Although the Qing Dynasty was of Manchu, not Chinese origin, they also invested effort in the development of the Chinese culture. Thus, they engaged in projects devoted to Chinese literature in history. In fact, their efforts helped preserve a lot of Chinese ancient literary works. An outstanding effort was made by Emperor Kangxi who â€Å"ordered the creation of the most complete dictionary of Chinese characters eve r put together at the time† (Encarta). The project on compiling the list of the important works related to Chinese culture was undertaken in the reign of Emperor Qianlong. Conclusion China in the period ranging from 1500 to 1900 experienced many events that left a deep imprint on modern China. Torn together by many different rulers, it nevertheless managed to maintain its unique culture and build upon it.It remained loyal to the ideals of Confucianism that were consistently implemented by the powerful monarchs who used the ideology to demand obedience. The rise of the Ming Dynasty was followed by its decline, the end of a cycle that opened the way to new rulers, the Manchus. Even being foreigners, they left a great deal of Chinese customs in place and left China even more culturally developed than it was. Even so, by the end of the nineteenth century, the nation was weakened politically and was heavily influenced by European powers.
